Essex v Eastern Counties

Sunday October 20th

Eastern Counties U16’s made a winning start in the London Divisional fixtures with a 22-18 win over local rivals Essex at Old Brentwoods last Sunday, October 30th

Two superbly taken tries from winger George Wacokecoke, a pupil at St Josephs College, Ipswich and a well deserved penalty try earned by the impressive pack, together with a penalty scored by Captain Ryan Headington who plays his rugby at Cambridge made up the Eastern Counties tally.  Essex had scored first with a fine try from their backs in a move which started on their own ten metre line, and an excellent solo effort from their winger kept Essex in the game.   However, the second half was all Eastern Counties, three times the Essex line was crossed but tries not awarded.  The Eastern Counties pack, led by props Bobby Rice and Alex Twigge both from Norfolk, provided great possession but the backs could not add the final scores.

“This was a great start to our three games, “ said Head Coach Nick Pressling.  “All the boys played well and we have a very strong squad this year. “

The Eastern Counties squad now look forward to playing at home against Kent on Sunday November 20th at Sudbury RFC, before their final match away to Hertfordshire in December.  Outstanding performances in these matches can earn the boys a place at the London Division trials early in 2012 which is another step on the path to England honours.
