Bury St Edmunds school scoop Award
More than 250 schools took part in the Tag 2 Twickenham this year in Eastern Counties. 6 schools went through to the final at Chigwell. The champions and runners up from each county.
Stanley Primary School from Teddington are making a return trip to Rugby School for the RFU YAZOO Tag 2 Twickenham national final after retaining the London North regional title at Chigwell.
Stanley, who went on to become the national champions of Tag 2 Twickenham last year, will be joined at Rugby School’s historic The Close on July 13 by London North runners-up West Leigh Junior School from Leigh-on-Sea.
The regional event was attended by 22 schools from across Middlesex, Essex, Hertfordshire and Eastern Counties, in the on-going campaign by the Rugby Football Union & YAZOO Primary School Programme to encourage the nation’s children to participate in sport and pursue healthier lifestyles.
A third prize on offer on the day was the Spirit of Rugby award, which goes to the school demonstrating true sportsmanship during the tournament, and was scooped by Horringer Court from Bury St Edmunds.
An added incentive for teams reaching the national final at Rugby School is that the winning team and the runners up will have the chance to play against each other during the half-time interval of an RBS 6 Nations fixture at Twickenham Stadium in 2012.
England international player Mark Cueto, the YAZOO Tag Rugby Ambassador and CVOC patron, said: “The Tag 2 Twickenham festivals always produce some great rugby skills and I’m sure there will have been some stars of the future on show.
“I’ve been involved with the programme for over four years and am proud to be a part of what is now the biggest tag rugby scheme in England.”
YAZOO and the RFU work in partnership with the national police children’s charity, Child Victims of Crime (CVOC), an initiative to keep children safe which started Tag 2 Twickenham in 2002. The charity funds the training of over 600 police staff a year to coach YAZOO Tag Rugby in primary schools.
In the last two years alone YAZOO, the RFU and CVOC have brought Tag Rugby to nearly two million children as well as donating balls, tag belts and other equipment to thousands of schools across the country.
Tag 2 Twickenham is one of the biggest primary school events of its kind in the country.
